The Beosound Stage is a modern work of art. It would not look out of place in MoMA, the Rose Seidler House, or even the home of the Brady Bunch. The design feels completely modern but so wonderfully retro at the same time. The smoked oak finish is incredibly smooth, and contrasts with the stressed grey pattern of the speaker grille.

Bluetooth speakers generally fall on two sides of a spectrum; they’re either cheap junk that sounds awful, or they sound great but are too expensive. Since the original UE Boom, Ultimate Ears has made durable, great sounding speakers at a reasonable price.

Gertie’s Law is the best podcast I’ve heard in 2019. The series has the same empathy and access to the courts as the classic documentary So Help Me God, and plays as a more successful version of Serial’s third season, offering the perfect mix of fly-on-the-wall soundscapes, narration and interviews.

The Beam produces remarkable sound for its tiny weight and size. Inside the unit, four woofers fire off in different directions to create room-filling sound. Audio is warm and clear, but what really amazes me is the level of bass from this tiny unit; it’s hard to believe it’s coming out of the Beam without a connected, dedicated subwoofer, although Sonos would be happy to sell you one if you still need more rumbling.

Earlier this year we reviewed Birde, an Australian designed smart speaker for children that utterly charmed me from the moment I unboxed it. The speaker chirps when you power it on, and takes just a minute to set up. Even the USB charger, that most boring and ubiquitous technology, is colourful and cute. (read more)
